(WLP) Weight Loss Program

How much weight will I lose on the Dr. MacLeod's program?

The average weight loss that you can expect is about 6kg (approx 1 stone) per month for women and 6-9kg per month for men. Some people find they do better than this, but these are realistic figures.

How does the Dr. MacLeod's weight loss program work and will I feel hungry?

The Dr. Macleod’s VLED (Very Low Energy (calorie) Diet) can be used
• As a partial meal replacement by replacing 2 meals per day and eating 1 “normal” meal OR
• as a total diet replacement under medical supervision replacing all meals with the Dr. MacLeod’s formula.

The weight loss with total diet replacement may be a little faster but more importantly it removes the margin for error when people find it hard to stick to the less restrictive 2 meal replacement regime.

In each instance you are reducing your calorie intake and your carbohydrate intake so that your body switches to breaking down excess body fat as the major energy source. This fat breakdown process also results in the body producing substances called ketones. This is a normal, safe and controlled process. Ketones have a natural appetite suppressing effect. So while it is normal to feel a bit hungry for the first few days on the program, as your body adjusts and starts producing ketones the hunger will go.

If you are feeling hungry ensure that your fluid intake is adequate. We sometimes mistake hunger for thirst. Or take advantage of the allowed vegetables, fluids, diet jelly and sugar free lollies as snacks.

I'm pregnant, can I go on the Dr. MacLeod's program?

No. Although there is nothing in the Dr. MacLeod's formula that would have an adverse affect in pregnancy, weight gain in pregnancy is quite normal. However to go on a weight reduction diet to limit this weight gain could result in baby not getting adequate nutrition for normal development. If weight gain in pregnancy is excessive (your Doctor would advise you of this) specialist help would be advised.

I've put on a lot of weight when I had my last baby and I am breast feeding - can I use the Dr. MacLeod's diet to lose this weight?

You should finish your breast feeding first. If you are on ANY weight reduction diet while breast feeding there is a chance that the quantity and quality of your milk could be affected. If you are about to wean or don't mind using a bottle supplement, should this happen, then there is no problem.

Is the Dr. MacLeod's program suitable for weight reduction in children?

Only after they have gone through their pubertal growth spurt. Younger overweight children however, need a different approach and have one advantage over adults, they are still growing. As a general rule in this case the aim is to keep the weight stable and allow natural growth to result in a better weight for height balance. This is generally done by reducing "junk" food intake and encouraging increased exercise.

Can I buy the Dr. MacLeod's weight management products at the supermarket or health food store?

No! The Dr. MacLeod's meal replacements form part of a medically supervised program and as such are only available through doctors and hospitals.

Can I be on the diet program without the supervision of a doctor?

No! There can be many health complications as a result of overweight and obesity that need to be monitored by a doctor whilst you are losing weight. Eg. medication levels may need to be altered as your body weight decreases. Therefore the Dr. MacLeod's program can only be obtained through doctors and hospitals.

I'm a diabetic. Can I still use the Dr. MacLeod's VLED meal replacements?

The diet is very suitable for non-insulin dependent diabetics under medical supervision. Insulin dependent diabetics however, are only suitable for this method of weight reduction with specialist medical help and supervision.

People say you should lose weight slowly and it is more likely to stay off?

This is usually the opinion of those who don’t have a rapid weight loss plan to offer. While you are keen to make progress and motivated, take advantage of that and lose as much weight as you can. After all, there is nothing that will motivate you more to continue your diet than to see a rapid result for your effort. Remember also whether or not you maintain your lower weight depends on whether you exercise and break old bad eating habits, not on how fast the weight was lost.

Why isn’t the program available elsewhere?

Long term weight management requires much more than dietary change. Advice regarding behaviour modification and appropriate changes in physical activity is essential to success. Furthermore many overweight patients have significant associated disease and may be on medication which needs to be monitored as weight is lost.

Is it normal to get headaches on the Dr. MacLeod's weight loss program?

Some people may experience headaches in the first few days of the Dr. MacLeod’s weight loss program however this is generally mild and not sufficient to interfere with activities However if headaches persist, see your doctor/healthcare professional.
One of the other reasons for headaches is dehydration and caffeine withdrawal. Make sure you consume a high fluid intake. Limited tea and coffee (2-3 cups per day) can be consumed with milk and a sugar substitute if desired.

Boost

Is Boost Nutritionally complete?

Yes. Boost is nutritionally complete

Can I buy Boost at Supermarkets or Health Food Stores?

No! Boost is available only through pharmacies.

I'm a diabetic, can I use Boost?

The Boost range of drinks, desserts and jellies contain sucrose as the main sweetening agent and source of energy (calories). Sucrose has a glycaemic index of 55 (on a scale of 1 -100); this indicates a medium effect on blood glucose levels. Therefore non-insulin dependent diabetics should tolerate these flavours.
The Boost soups have a lower glycaemic index and are suitable for both insulin dependent and non-insulin dependent diabetics. If in doubt, please seek the advice of your doctor/healthcare professional or nutritionist.

Is Boost lactose free?

No. The Boost products contain lactose at the following levels (measured in grams per serve).

DIRECTIONS:
DRINKS: 20.00
DESSERTS: 20.00
JELLIES: 7.00
SOUPS:
• Cream of Chicken 0.50
• Butternut Pumpkin 3.00
• Beef & Mushroom 1.80
• Potato & Leek 0.35

Is Boost tolerated by Coeliacs?

Coeliacs are intolerant to products derived from wheat, oats, barley or rye. Coeliacs can tolerate Boost drinks, desserts and jellies as they do not contain products derived from these four grains. Boost soups however contain wheat protein, and are therefore unsuitable for Coeliacs. Is Boost suitable for children?
Yes. In fact the Boost range is a fantastic alternative for children in need of nutritional supplementation. The Boost products taste great and are enjoyed by the fussiest of eaters. I’m pregnant, can I take Boost?
Boost is a nutritional supplement and can be taken safely during pregnancy when nutritional intake maybe poor. Any dietary intake should be taken after consultation with a healthcare professional.

How much Boost do I need to have a day?

Boost can be taken as a meal substitute or supplement to normal eating. The amount to be taken daily depends on how much normal eating you can do. Eg., a person recuperating from an operation unable to tolerate any solid foods should supplement their diet with several serves of Boost a day. Any dietary intake should be taken after consultation with a healthcare professional.

Can Boost be used as a weight loss product?

No! The Boost formula contains 30% more carbohydrates and 50% less protein than the Dr. MacLeod's weight management formula. The higher carbohydrate level will prevent significant weight loss by stopping ketosis and the lower protein level will result in lean tissue loss rather than fat loss, ensuring rebound weight gain.

Are any of the ingredients in the Boost products genetically modified?

No.
